Eider down is an exceptionally rare and highly valued natural material obtained from the breast down of the common eider duck (Somateria mollissima), also known simply as the eider. It is not wool in the true sense of the word (like sheep’s wool), but an extremely fine and soft down. Eider down is collected by hand from the nests of eider ducks after the ducklings have left the nest. The birds line their nests with this down to protect the eggs from the cold. The down is extremely lightweight, soft, exceptionally warm, and has outstanding insulating properties. It is considered one of the most luxurious insulating materials in the world. It is most commonly used for the production of exclusive duvets and pillows. Eider down is very expensive because its collection is labour-intensive and the available quantity is limited.
