Terilen®
Terylene (also spelled terilene; known in the Anglo-Saxon world as Terylene) is a trade name for a synthetic polyester fiber based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It was developed in England during the 1940s and entered industrial production from 1947 onward. The material gained popularity due to its strength, resistance to light, low moisture absorption, and easy maintenance.
The production of Terylene involves the polycondensation of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, forming PET, which is then melted and extruded through spinnerets to form fibers. These fibers can be engineered into fine, glossy “polyester silks” or thicker, more durable fabrics depending on their intended use. By modifying the cross-sectional shape and surface properties, special effects can be achieved—for example, a triangular profile to enhance shine or hollow fibers to improve insulation properties.
In the textile industry, Terylene became a symbol of durable, colorfast, and easy-care fabrics suitable for clothing, suits, curtains, and technical textiles. It is also widely blended with cotton and wool to improve the strength and durability of yarns. The importance of Terylene is reflected in its role in global polyester production—it is one of the most widely used materials in modern apparel and home textile manufacturing.
