Coir
Coir is a natural material extracted from the husk of the coconut (Cocos nucifera). It consists of coarse, durable fibres located between the hard inner shell and the outer coating of the coconut. Its processing history dates back over 2,000 years to India and Southeast Asia, with the earliest references found in ancient Indian texts. Traditional processing involves harvesting coconuts, manually extracting the husks, retting them in water, and then separating, drying, and further refining the fibres.
In the textile industry, coir is mainly used for producing floor coverings (mats, carpets), ropes, twine, woven nets, and mattress fillings. It is highly resistant to moisture, decay, and salt, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use as well as technical textiles such as geotextiles and soil protection materials. Due to its renewable and eco-friendly origin, coir is widely valued in sustainable manufacturing.
