Eucalyptus fibre is a modern cellulose-based textile material mainly produced through the lyocell process from eucalyptus wood pulp, often known under the trade name TENCEL™. Its history dates back to the 1980s, when it was developed as a more environmentally friendly alternative to viscose and cotton. Eucalyptus is a fast-growing tree that generally requires no pesticides, fertilisers, or artificial irrigation, while producing textile fibre with significantly lower water consumption than cotton cultivation.
The manufacturing process involves breaking down the wood into pulp, dissolving it in a non-toxic solvent (amine oxide), and then extruding the solution through spinnerets to create fine, strong, and breathable fibres. Nearly 99% of the solvent used is recycled in a closed-loop system, making the production process environmentally responsible.
Eucalyptus fibre is naturally antimicrobial, elastic, highly absorbent (absorbing about 50% more moisture than cotton), thermoregulating, and quick-drying, providing comfort in both warm and cool conditions. In the textile industry, it is primarily used for high-quality clothing, bed linen, sportswear, and functional textiles. The material is also fully biodegradable, which contributes to its growing popularity in sustainable fashion and eco-friendly textile production.
