papierová priadza
Paper yarn is a special textile material made by twisting narrow strips of paper, typically produced from plant-based fibers such as abaca, hemp, mulberry, or wood-derived cellulose pulp. Its historical use dates back to 16th-century Japan, where it was developed using washi paper techniques to create fine woven fabrics called shifu, originally worn by aristocracy. Later, similar traditions appeared in Korea (hanji) and eventually in Europe.
Production involves making paper sheets, cutting them into thin strips (about 1–6 mm), condensing them, and wet-twisting them into yarn. Additional finishing treatments may include bleaching, dyeing, and textile surface sizing to improve strength, flexibility, and resistance to moisture. Paper yarn is lightweight, breathable, low in elasticity, and highly absorbent, with natural antibacterial and deodorizing properties.
In the textile industry, it is used for knitting and crocheting hats, bags, baskets, summer accessories, decorations, tableware, wallpapers, lightweight garments, and also in technical and eco-friendly textile applications. Modern research highlights its environmental benefits, as it is biodegradable, recyclable, and has a very low ecological footprint.
