Fur
Fur is a natural material obtained from the skins of animals with a hair covering, where both the hair (fur) and the outer skin remain intact. It is one of the oldest materials used for clothing. Its history dates back to prehistoric humans, including Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, who used animal fur garments for protection against cold climates. Processing involves skinning the animal hide, removing remaining flesh and fat, preserving it with salt, and then softening and tanning the skin to maintain flexibility, insulating properties, and the natural appearance of the fur. Additional steps include drying, combing, and sometimes dyeing the hair. In the textile industry, fur is used for luxury and warm garments such as coats, collars, hats, and gloves, as well as accessories, interior decoration, and traditional folk costumes. It is valued for its excellent thermal insulation, softness, natural sheen, and durability, although it is also widely criticised for ethical reasons. Today, it is often replaced by synthetic or eco-friendly faux fur alternatives.
