Ribs
A fabric weave derived from plain weave. In warp rib weave—the second most commonly used weave in traditional home textiles in Slovakia during the 19th and 20th centuries—the weft thread alternately passes under one and over one warp thread. In the next row, the position of the warp threads is shifted, resulting in a fabric with vertical ribs in which the warp is completely covered by the weft.
In traditional home weaving, the term “rib weave” was not commonly used. Fabrics made in this structure were called, for example, zalievanô (referring to the covering of the warp by the weft), jedinčina (with single upper and lower warp threads), dupeľ or dvojňačka (warp threads doubled), na kostku, zúbky (patterns formed by a two-colored weft).
