Willow wicker

Willow wicker is a natural, flexible, and pliable material obtained from thin, long shoots of various willow species, primarily basket willow (Salix viminalis) and white willow (Salix alba). Its history dates back to prehistoric and early medieval times, when it was traditionally used for weaving baskets, mats, fences, and various small utility and decorative items. Wickerwork was especially widespread in regions with abundant wetlands. Processing involves harvesting young, long shoots, often during the dormant season, followed by peeling or boiling (depending on the desired appearance and flexibility), soaking, and sorting by length and thickness. Before use, the rods are soaked to increase flexibility, and after drying they retain both strength and pliability. In the textile and craft sector, willow wicker is used mainly for weaving technical and decorative structures such as baskets, mats, fillings, and also as a natural reinforcement in nonwoven textiles or as part of artistic installations. Its main advantages are sustainability, renewability, and its ability to be easily dyed or finished.
