Goat hair fabric

Goat hair is a natural textile material obtained from the fleece of various goat breeds, most notably Angora goats (mohair), Cashmere goats (cashmere), or common utility goats. It is derived either from the undercoat or from longer guard hairs. Its history dates back to antiquity—cashmere and mohair fibres were highly valued in Asia thousands of years ago for producing fine shawls, blankets, and luxury textiles, while in folk traditions goat hair was mainly used for technical fabrics and ropes. Processing involves shearing or combing the animals, separating the fine undercoat (used for delicate textiles) from the coarser outer fibers (used for technical purposes), followed by washing, drying, and carding. The fibers are then either blended with other wool types or spun into yarn on their own. Fine goat fibers are known for excellent thermal insulation, lightness, softness, and shape retention, while coarser fibers provide strength and are suitable for carpets or reinforcement materials. In the textile industry, goat hair is used for luxury scarves, fashion accessories, fine knitwear (cashmere, mohair), durable carpets, and artistic textiles, as well as in technical applications such as brushes or filtration fabrics. Its unique combination of softness, elasticity, and strength makes it a highly valued material in both traditional and modern textile production.
