Jute fabric
Jute fabric is a natural textile material woven from the fibers of the jute plant (Corchorus olitorius, C. capsularis), also known as “golden fiber” due to its slight sheen and characteristic color. Jute is one of the cheapest, strongest, and most eco-friendly plant fibers—it is the second most widely used natural raw material after cotton, with the main producers being Bangladesh, India, and China.
Production involves retting the stems in water, removing non-fibrous parts, combing, bleaching, spinning, and subsequent weaving. The result is a coarser, matte fabric with high strength and good moisture absorption.
In the past, jute fabric was used for making sacks, burlap, carpets, storage bags, household decorations, and packaging materials. Today, it is also widely used as an eco-product in packaging, agriculture (geotextiles), interior design, carpet manufacturing, footwear, wallpapers, technical textiles, and as a reinforcing material in the automotive industry.
The advantages of jute fabric include 100% biodegradability, versatility in dyeing and blending with other fibers, low cost, and simple cultivation technology.
