Hemp rope
Hemp rope is a durable textile cord made from long bast fibers of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa), known for its exceptional strength, resistance to moisture, and natural durability. The history of hemp rope dates back to ancient China around 2800 BCE, where hemp cords were used in construction, shipping, mining, and fishing. In Europe, hemp rope reached its peak between the 17th and 19th centuries, especially in maritime applications such as ship rigging, sails, and nets.
Production begins with hemp cultivation and harvesting, followed by retting (soaking), drying, mechanical separation of bast fibers, and thorough combing. The fibers are then spun into thick yarns, which are twisted and braided into ropes of the desired thickness.
Hemp ropes have excellent tensile strength, maintain their shape even in humid conditions, and are naturally antibacterial and resistant to UV radiation. However, they may wear faster under heavy dynamic stress over time. In the textile industry, hemp ropes are used for binding, technical, construction, maritime, and eco-friendly applications, ranging from decorative elements to functional ropes in sports, building, and sustainable design.
