Hand-spun flax yarn
Hand-spun flax yarn is a natural textile material made from fine, long bast fibers of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), and it is considered one of the oldest and most valuable fibers in human civilization. Its history dates back to the Neolithic period—flax was widely used in the Mediterranean region, ancient Egypt, and later across Europe for producing fabrics, ropes, clothing, and household textiles.
The production process involves harvesting mature flax stems, followed by retting (soaking), drying, breaking, scutching, and hackling of the fibers. Hand spinning is then carried out using a spindle or spinning wheel, allowing the creation of fine, even yarn tailored to specific end uses.
Flax yarn is strong, breathable, resistant to moisture, highly absorbent, antistatic, and naturally antibacterial, with a subtle natural sheen. When well processed, it becomes soft and smooth, making it suitable even for sensitive skin and allergy sufferers. In the textile industry, it is used for weaving traditional fabrics, linens, folk costumes, tablecloths, nets, embroidery, and eco-friendly products—its value lies especially in sustainability, regional availability, and a long tradition of handcrafted textile production.
