Skalická Hildegarda
In the mid-1960s, during maternity leave, she signed up for a course in the production of shell dolls at the ÚĽUV. The export of shell dolls, also called shells, to Western Europe increased in those days (up to four hundred female manufacturers produced them for ÚĽUV), which is why she could afford to leave her previous job as an administrative worker and work full-time for ten years as a manufacturer of this type of decorative items. The necessary husks were obtained every year in cooperation with other manufacturers from Bratislava by collecting them from the surrounding farmers' cooperatives. In the mid-1970s, the export of shells decreased and there was no longer a need for so many producers, so Hildegarda Skalická returned to the administration.
However, she did not last long without ÚĽUV - soon she got into the production of costumed bookmarks (figures in costume with lace) through boater friends of the Fiedlers. She started making them while working and persisted with them even in retirement – in 2017, when this text was written, she was their only manufacturer.
