canvas store
The canvas market has evolved from ancient, utilitarian hemp/flax fabric for sails and tents into a diverse global industry spanning high-end art, durable fashion, and industrial applications. Originating in India (c. 1500 BC) and popularized in 15th-century Venice, canvas became the preferred, durable alternative to wood for artists and shipping. Today, it is a multibillion-dollar market. The canvas market in Slovakia was mainly supplied by rural domestic producers, partly by artisan producers. The production and sale of linen developed mainly in the 18th and the first half of the 19th century due to increased demand. In the 1840s, Slovakia produced 2/3 of the entire Hungarian linen production. The main production area was Spiš, followed by Orava and Šariš. A significant number of producers were also in Liptov, Gemer, Turec, Zemplín, and in the Zvolen and Trenčín Counties. In the linen trade in eastern Slovakia, Balkan merchants from the south of Hungary and urban dyers, among whom there were wholesalers in Kežmarok and Rožňava, and in the first half of the 19th century, bleaching plant owners from Prešov, Bardejov and many Spiš municipalities stood out, especially in the 18th century. Merchants obtain goods by direct purchase from producers in their place of residence and at markets. In Orava, the local population was engaged in linen weaving. He is engaged in door-to-door trade.
