slipper-making

Home-made and artisanal production of knitted or sewn slippers. Slippers were knitted with five needles until the 18th century. An older form of slippers were stockings (knee socks), knitted from sheep's wool and felted in warm water. They were worn in kropce, cloth slippers or sewn on the foot with cloth. At the end of the 18th century, sewing slippers from homespun cloth (kapce) also became widespread. The production of slippers varied in methods (sewing, knitting), their shape (with or without a sari, full slippers or with a slit), decoration, and color (white, gray, black, and multicolored).
