Hemp-wool insulation
Hemp–wool insulation is a modern natural insulating material that combines fibres from industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) and sheep’s wool. Since the 1990s, its development has responded to the growing demand for ecological, renewable, and health-safe alternatives to synthetic insulation materials.
The history of both components goes back to ancient times—hemp fibre and wool have been used in textile production for thousands of years—but their combined use to enhance insulating properties only became more common in the new millennium, alongside the rise of sustainable construction and technical textiles.
Production involves the mechanical processing of hemp stalks and wool, which are then blended in a defined ratio and formed into mats, panels, or loose-fill insulation layers without the need for additional chemical binders. This type of insulation is highly vapour-permeable, helps regulate indoor microclimates, is naturally resistant to mould and pests, and provides good thermal and acoustic performance. Due to its flexibility, it can also be applied in textile design, as well as in the automotive and furniture industries.
Hemp–wool insulation represents a sustainable trend in natural textile-based materials for eco-friendly buildings and specialised technical applications.
