Hand-spun hemp yarn
Hand-spun hemp yarn is a natural textile material produced through traditional spinning methods from long bast fibers of hemp (Cannabis sativa), considered one of the oldest and most sustainable textile raw materials. The history of hemp spinning dates back to ancient Asian civilizations such as China and India, and later spread across Europe, where hemp yarn was used for centuries in household and craft production of textiles, ropes, and sails.
The process begins with hemp cultivation and harvesting of stems, followed by retting (soaking), mechanical separation of bast fibers, combing, softening, and finally hand spinning—traditionally using a spindle or spinning wheel, where fibers are gradually twisted into yarn.
The resulting yarn is strong, relatively coarse compared to flax or cotton, but breathable, resistant to moisture, microorganisms, and decomposition. With careful processing, it can also become finer and more flexible. In the textile industry, hand-spun hemp yarn is used for weaving rustic fabrics, ropes, cords, carpets, decorative materials, traditional costumes, embroidery, and eco-friendly applications where its natural origin and sustainability are highly valued.
