embroidery

Technique of decorating textiles or leather by arranging stitches with a needle and thread, and later also with a sewing machine. In Slovak folk culture, embroidery developed significantly from the late 18th century onward, in connection with the improved social status of the rural population and the growing desire to embellish clothing. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, embroidery reached its peak and diversified into numerous local variants shaped by skilled embroiderers and pattern drawers.
