loom

Device used for making fabrics – weaving. Since the Neolithic era, vertical looms with clay weights have been used for weaving in Slovakia. Around the 10th-11th century, horizontal frame looms with foot-operated heddles began to be used. These were used in both domestic and artisanal hand weaving until the 20th century. Artisan weavers also called them a workbench, a loom. The basis of the looms were two frames (sides, tripods, looms), connected by transverse beams. The looms had two cylinders (spindles): the rear one for the warp and the front one for the fabric. Laths were placed crosswise across the frames, on which hung a pole with a bridle and heddles, moving in pulley wheels and controlled by feet. Before weaving, the warp, prepared by warping, was wound onto the rear warp. Two flat sticks (spindles) were inserted into the warp thread cross and the threads were taken up (threaded) into the heddles and into the heddle according to the weave of the future fabric.
