Method of joining fibers, threads, rods, or other elements by crossing, twisting, looping, or interlacing them. In the territory of present-day Slovakia, techniques for braiding bast, grass stalks, leather strips, and similar materials were probably known as early as the Paleolithic period. Braiding was used to make everyday objects such as baskets, sieves, fishing tools, wire products, footwear, belts, caps, lace, and other textile forms.
